Rialto Area Information

After incorporation during the 1900s, the Inland Empire city continued to grow. State highways were improved, railroads completed, and the heightened – attractive passenger services paved the way for tourists travel as well as provided opportunity for adventurous and motivated settlers. To some, Rialto is the Spanish term meaning “River High’’. Others suggest that the city is named after one of its most famous bridges from the city of Venice, Italy. Although there were questions about the origin of the city’s name, there is the landmark that symbolizes the struggles of progress. Both the city of Rialto and its School District adopted the city’s emblem that symbolizes a bridge; thereby referring to the city as the “Bridge to Success”. Rialto Property Management professionals are always available to oversee the daily operations of Rialto’s historic rental properties.

Archaeologists discovered ancient artifacts that would suggest settlement prior to the 1500s. The artifacts indicate that the Serrano Indians were the first to settle in the Rialto area (around 1500 and 1800AD) and can be found at the Rialto Historical Society to date. The Indians were never heard of again, yet in 1842 the Lugo family was granted the Rancho San Bernardino. Part of the 37,000 acre rancho that encompassed Rialto, along with other portions of the bench was sold to the Mountain Family in 1851. The area was later deemed Rialto and amended by the United States Government, permitting them only a fraction of the initial purchase. An early 19th century adobe building was used over the years for many purposes and is still the oldest building standing in the city.

A railroad line was built to connect San Bernardino and Pasadena in 1887 by the Santa Fe Railroad. During the same year, over 25 town sites were being developed along the line and the Semitropic Land and Water Company was formed in order to organize the purchase and sales of real estate and water.

In the early part of 1888, the city’s first school was built. The Rialto School District, currently called the Rialto Unified School District was formed in 1891. After establishing the Chamber of Commerce in 1907, the Chamber incorporated the city of Rialto in 1911. Rialto’s population grew immensely, with up to 40 businesses and a local newspaper.
