Riverside Area Information

Founded in 1870, the City of Riverside County is situated in the Inland Empire metropolitan area. It became the county seat in 1893 after Riverside County, California was carved from a portion of San Bernardino County and from a larger part of San Diego County. In the beginning, the area was inhabited by a number of Native Americans, to include the Serranos, the Cahuillas, the Chemehuevi, the Cupenos, and the Luisenos. Riverside was founded by John W. North alongside the Santa Ana River. Judge John Wesley North was a staunch temperance-minded abolitionist from Tennessee who had previously discovered Northfield, Minnesota. Incidentally, Riverside was characterized as temperance-minded and Republican. Although the Judge was ostracized back to Tennessee after convincing a crowd not to lynch a Black man, he escorted a group of co-investors and associates to Southern California in which they discovered Riverside on part of the Jurupa Rancho.

A few years later, the navel orange was planted. Due to the success of the navel orange and by the time Riverside County was formed, Riverside had become the wealthiest city per capita in the country. In the early 1890s, there was mounting discontent amongst the Riverside and San Bernardino communities. San Bernardino was of the Democratic persuasion, with saloons which was highly objectionable by the Riverside Republican-minded citizens. The many political, spiritual, and economic differences between the two towns caused such turmoil that the Riverside residents decided to petition the State Legislature. An election was held and on May 9, 1893, Riverside County was developed.
