Lake Elsinore Area Information

Positioned in western Riverside County, California, Lake Elsinore was established as a city in 1888. The Native Americans, Luiseño Indians were the earliest known inhabitants to settle in the area. The Luiseño Indians called the natural lake Entengro Wumoma, which translated into Hot Springs by the Little Sea. A Lake Elsinore Property Management professional can help you manage your local property while identifying the historical pictographs found on rocks of the Santa Ana Mountains as well as in the Temescal Valley. Locals also appreciate the value in the artifacts and historic collections scattered around Lake Elsinore, canyons and hills.

Overlooked by Juan Bautista de Anza’s expedition, the Spanish Franciscan padre Juan Santiago was the first to explore the natural lake of Southern California in 1797. The Spaniards referred to the lake as Laguna Grande and as the lake expanded by the 19th century, it became a part of the Mexican land grant, Rancho La Laguna. The land ultimately provided refuge for Mexican Rancheros and American trappers. During the California Gold Rush, John Frèmont and the immigrants traveled along the shore of Lake Elsinore to camp and water the animals. This expedition was later known as the Southern Emigrant Trail and the Butterfield Overland Mail.

In 1844, Julian Mariquez acquired the Rancho Laguna land grant. It was a tract of nearly 20,000 acres which included the lake and an adobe that was being constructed near the lakes south shore. Acquired by Abel Stearns in 1851, the California Rancho was sold to Don Agustin Machado in 1858. The 12,832 acre rancho is settled by Don Agustin Machado as he built a seven-room adobe ranch house along with an outbuilding on the southwest side of the lake. Not only did the Machado’s adobe home become a part of the historic Butterfield stage route, it also served as the relay station for mail and passengers. It continues to be a staple today near the Grand Avenue region.

In 1883, the Machado Rancho is sold to the City founder, Mr. Franklin Heald for $24,000. It was realized that a dream will evolve into the future City of Lake Elsinore. One of the city’s founders, Margaret Graham chose the name “Elsinore” because she was fond of how it sounded and that it was a name taken from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. At this point, Elsinore was situated in San Diego County. The City becomes part of the newly formed County of Riverside in 1893.
