Murrieta Area Information

By the time Murrieta was officially declared a city in 1991, it was the home for more than 24,000 residents. And, by 2005, more than 85,000 others migrated to the community making it one of the five largest cities in Riverside County. Esequial Murrieta, a Spaniard, purchased the Rancho Pauba and Rancho Temecula Mexican land grants with the intensions of bringing his sheep-raising business to California. Shortly thereafter, Esequial returned to Spain and turned the 52,000 acre land over to his younger brother, Juan. In 1873, Juan Murrieta (1844-1936) transported 100,000 sheep to the valley and used the meadows to feed them.

In 1882, a depot was constructed and linked the Murrieta valley to the Southern California Railroads transcontinental route. As a result, other citizens discovered the valley and by 1890, some 800 residents settled in the emerging Murrieta city. The train ceased operation in 1935, causing a breakdown in tourism. Because tourism, as well as the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort was the lifeline of the city’s prosperity, the movement of the city also came to a sudden halt. However, a new community eventually sprouted which activated an era for remarkable growth. Today, its exquisiteness, its entrepreneurial forecasts, and its stout employment opportunities enable Murrieta to continuously attract significant numbers of residents and businesses.
