Perris Area Information

The City of Perris Valley is located in Riverside County of Southern California and is adorned for its mild, Mediterranean climate. With a young, diverse population, the city that started as a somnolent farming community celebrated its 100th birthday in 2011. The community was originally formulated along the California Pacific Railroad line and then officially incorporated as a city in 1911. Perris Valley was actively settled during the 1800s following the erection of the California Southern Railroad and its new depot.

Fred T. Perris, chief engineer of the California Southern Railroad (CSR) is credited for the city’s name. In 1882, the engineer strategically spear-headed the construction of the CSR where tracks were laid through what would be the future town site. It opened a rail connection between today’s Barstow and San Diego cities.

The California Southern Railroad purchased land from the Southern Pacific Railroad in Pinacate in order to gain the town site. Its citizens offered to erect a depot, dig a well plus donate lots in hopes to establish a station at the new town site. However, as a result of the land title dispute occurring in Pinacate, many of the citizens migrated two miles north via the railroad. Those citizens would inevitably establish the city of Perris in 1885. Originally a part of San Diego County, the city was transferred to Riverside County in 1892.
