Solana Beach Area Information

Solana Beach is the charming, affluent city in San Diego County, California. Before 1923, the seaside community was called Locked Messa and was originally settled by the family of George H. Jones in the late 1880s. In 1917, Lake Hodges Dam was built, which enabled the Solana Beach area to rapidly develop. The 12,000-acre Santa Fe Irrigation District was created in 1918 to ensure expansion and prosperity throughout the Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach areas. By the early 1920s, Solana Beach down to the Oceanside coastline started to boom. The Solana Beach Property Management team is available to provide real estate updates, community history, and other pertinent information visitors may want to consider when investing in the steadily emerging coastal community.

An established community leader and developer by the name of Colonel Ed Fletcher purchased 140 acres from George H. Jones at $120 per acre in 1922. With the assistance of his brother-in-law, Colonel Fletcher’s primary objective was to develop the town of Solana Beach. The feat began by simply providing access to the beach. Hydraulic water pressure was used to erode away mounds of earth and create the Fletcher Cove entry with an open beach. For three months, one man deployed a single fire hose to attain water from Lake Hodges Dam spillway. Finally, on July 4th 1925, Solana beach was accessible to the community, offering exciting adventures, to include coastal horse racing. The community, nestled along the northern coast of San Diego County continued to grow over the century, particularly following World War II and subsequent to the real estate explosion during the final quarter of the 20th century. The city was officially incorporated as Solana Beach in 1986.

Although still recognized as a relatively tranquil coastal town, Solana Beach was yet again the focus of national news in 2003. It became the first city in the Continental United States to enact a smoking ban on its public beaches- following the trend of other Californian coastal towns that prohibited seashore smoking. After the unanimous approval by the City Council, Solana Beach was the last coastal community in North San Diego County to also ban alcohol on the beach.
