Bonsall Area Information

Originally called Mount Fairview, the town of Bonsall was retitled in 1890 in honor of the local minister James A. Bonsall. The area had a post office named Mt Fairview from December 28, 1971 to December 28, 1880. In 1881, the town received a post office in the name of Joseph O. Osgood. Osgood was a California Southern chief engineer. The renaming of the post office was voided upon the attempt to convince Osgood to build a railroad through the San Luis Rey River valley and it was unsuccessful. Instead, the railroad followed the Santa Margarita River.

In 1889, a petition for a post office recommended the names, “Reed”, “Favorite”, or “Bonsall”. The Post Office Headquarters, located in Washington, DC chose Bonsall after the minister who settled a fruit tree nursery in the area. Mr. Bonsall was apparently transporting a load of lumber south via Gopher Canyon when his wagon broke down. He became so fond of the area that he purchased acreage from a settler, then built a home and developed the nursery-all with a cash capital of only $3. Minister Bonsall’s enterprise was very prosperous and the property remains integral today.

During the latter 1800s, the hamlet of Bonsall offered the services of a post office, along with a blacksmith shop that was complete with a tethering rock, a general store, hotel, and a local school. Moreover, the fertile valley became the central point for a small dairy industry. The post office was a community center, yet the postman not only delivered mail. He transported cream from the Bonsall Creamery to the train in Oceanside, which was shipped to San Diego.

The community that surrounded the schoolhouse was made up of large ranches and small farms. The valley contained several dairies, registered Herford cattle, truck farms, chicken, turkey, pig and ostrich farms, rabbitries, as well as wine grapes and olive ranches. Some people in the community raised thoroughbred horses and cured bees. The water was pumped from nearby wells along the river.
