Corona Area Information
Originally named South Riverside, Corona was founded in 1861 as a result of the Southern California citrus boom. Located approximately 45 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Corona, California is a General Law City hallmarked for its many significant features. The Western Riverside County community is ideally situated at the base of the Cleveland National Forest Mountains and just north of the Santa Ana River. The mountainous national forest separate Orange County from the Inland Empire region of Southern California.
Historically, the first sited Spanish family, the Luiseño Indians settled in Riverside County. The area is also known for the Temescal Tin Mines in addition to some of the most valuable mineral deposits and clay in the United States. Corona, California is also the home of the first lemon processing plant in the country, built in 1915. In 1985, the world’s largest cheese plant was launched on Lincoln Ave where Desi Arnaz horse ranch once stood. Some people who still want to look for ranches for sale can be surprised to see this part in the town’s history.
The City of Corona has a phenomenal and unique history. As Southern California started to grow, so did the Corona community. The local Luiseño Indians were identified as hunters and gatherers. The Native American values and way of living is currently notable in the community. The Indian tribes were under the influence of Spanish settlers and were given the name Luiseño.
In 1886, Developer Robert Taylor and his partners formed the South Riverside Land and Water Company. They purchased 12,000 acres of agricultural land and used additional funds to attain sufficient water rights in anticipation of a developing community. The town’s founders initially named their development South Riverside after the successful citrus community of Riverside. Almost all of the new settlers planted orange and lemon trees and by 1961, citrus was considered the backbone of Corona’s economy.
With the heightened city population, the residents voted to incorporate and change the name of their community to Corona (Spanish for crown) on July 13, 1896. The name was in honor of Taylor’s designed Grand Boulevard. The circular street embodied the primary functions of the community- Church, schools, stores, and residences.
