Del Mar Area Information

Theodore Loop worked for the railroad and became extremely fond of what he called “the most attractive place on the entire coast”. The Southern California railroad began a new route from San Diego to San Bernardino in 1882. Theodore and his wife, Ella, put together a tent city directly on the beach. Ella entitled the construction Del Mar, a tribute to the poem, “The fight on Paseo Del Mar”.

Within the same year, Colonel Jacob Taylor also stumbled across the currently affluent beach city, Del Mar, which is Spanish for “by the sea” or “of the sea”. In 1885, Colonel Taylor decided to take advantage of the city, located on the Pacific Ocean and its sudden land boom. Taylor purchased 338.11 acres from Enoch Talbert for $1000. He had visions of designing and building a seaside resort for the rich and famous wherein he would call Casa Del Mar. Initially the distinguished resort destination thrived, however, in the late 1880s; it succumbed to bankruptcy, flood, and fire. After several years, the South Coast Land Company built a new hotel called Stratford Inn. When the doors opened in 1910, the hotel became the focal point of the town and a magnet for the rich and famous.

During the 1920s, an event occurred that changed Del Mar forever. The City received electric from San Diego Gas and Electric. This event had a huge impact on Del Mar’s residential areas. Electricity enabled the city to develop at a record pace. By 1958, the residents of Del Mar began debating on whether they wanted the area to remain a part of San Diego or become independent via incorporation. The residents opted incorporation and established a council-manager type of government. This form of management continues to rule to date.

Some common attractions in Del Mar include the Los Penasquitos Lagoon and the Del Mar Race Track. The Del Mar Races are a very popular destination for visitors. Every summer, the Del Mar Fairgrounds transforms into an annual fair which attracts locals and visitors alike.
