Grand Terrace Area Information

The professional Grand Terrace Property Management team helps the community discover the city’s solid residential market. Its roots began in the 1830s in which the Mexican land was granted to private owners. In accordance to the Riverside Press, nine buildings were constructed in the Terrace-Colton area by 1876. The development of Grand Terrace turned into a reality after the erection of the 22-1/2 mile Gage Canal.

Formerly referred to as the East Riverside-Highgrove area, Grand Terrace rapidly developed into an agricultural community shortly after the creation of the $2 million canal. The canal brought water from the Santa Ana River marshlands below the Terrance. The irrigation water enabled the community to feature fine, quality citrus. Unfortunately, a severe freeze in 1913 destroyed many of the groves. A more resistant tree, the walnut tree, and peaches were planted as a replacement crop for quick-profiting.

In the early 1900s, the social activities centered primarily on Women’s Club events (established in 1908) and the Farm Bureau Extension Service. The P.T.A was also a significant part of the social community in the 1930s. The people of the local community traveled to the surrounding communities for worship and other religious activities.

Because of its higher ground, Grand Terrace was originally called “The Terrace”. The term “Grand” was added to describe the areas lovely view. The area’s first settlers were Dr. Benjamin Barton and Dr. W. R. Fox. The Riverside Highland Water Company was formed in 1898 and thus the Grand Terrace community was officially formed.
