La Jolla Area Information

The hilly seaside community occupies 7 miles of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean. The La Jolla Property Management team will oversee your property in one of California’s most prominent beach destinations in San Diego. The La Jolla area was incorporated as a part of the charted City of San Diego when California became a state in 1850. Prior to this movement and during the Mexican period, La Jolla was actually mapped as pueblo land with about 60 lots.

In 1870, Charles Dean acquired several of these lots and subdivided them into an area known as La Jolla Park. Dean attempts to develop the land were unsuccessful and he eventually departed San Diego in 1881. Speculators Frank T. Botsford and George W. Heald were able to further develop the meagerly settled area as a result of the progressive real estate explosion of the 1880s.

By the 1890s, the San Diego- Pacific Beach- La Jolla Railway was created. The railway connected La Jolla to the rest of San Diego and became known as a resort area. More so, the railway built facilities such as a bath house and a dance pavilion in hopes to attract more beach visitors. Current travelers were housed in small cottages and bungalows above the La Jolla Cove. The visitors were also lodged in a temporary “tent city”, which were erected during the summer. Two of the original cottages built in 1894 still exist; the Red Roost and the Red Rest (also known as the Neptune or Cove Tea Room). These cottages have been vacant since the 1980s. The La Jolla Park Hotel was opened for the public in 1893. “Squire” James A. Wilson built the Hotel Cabrillo in 1908. The hotel was subsequently incorporated into the La Valencia Hotel.

Presently, La Jolla is known for their fresh seafood, Torrey Pines state beach and La Jolla Shores state beach. Only 15 minutes from Downtown San Diego, La Jolla is an amazing place to establish a vacation rental. Other tourist locations include Birch Aquarium and La Jolla Cove where you can see active marine life in their natural habitat.
