San Marcos Area Information

Historical legends account that a band of Indians robbed the San Luis Rey Mission flocks sometime during the late 18th century. The small band of Indians managed to flee the Spanish troops and dashed to the hills. In 1797, while in pursuit of the Indians, the Spaniards discovered a fertile valley called Los Vallecitos de San Marcos (Little Valleys of Saint Mark), which honored the official date of its inception (April 25- Saint Mark’s Day).

Governor Juan B. Alvarado granted Rancho Vallecitos de San Marcos to his relative, Jose M. Alvarado on April 22, 1840. In 1846, Mr. Alvarado was killed at the Pauma Massacre and the land was granted to his wife. The wife ultimately sold the land to Lorenzo Soto. Soto sold part of the land during the 1950s to Cave Couts and his family who opted to raise livestock shortly thereafter. Although Cave Couts was the original owner of the land, Major Gustavus French Merriam from Topeka, Kansa made the first permanent settlement. Merriam homesteaded 160-acres in the north Twin Oaks Valley. After which, he began to produce wine and honey.

German and Dutch immigrants began to occupy the area in the early 1880s following Major Merriam’s settlement. In 1883, just a few miles south of the Major’s settlement, John H. Barham originated the first town within the vicinity. The town of Barham, by 1884, had a post office, feed store, blacksmith, and a weekly newspaper. By 1887, almost all the San Marcos land, which was formally owned by the Couts’ family, was purchased by the San Marcos Land Company. The Company quickly divided the land into tracts and then the striking hills started to attract home-seekers.

The San Marcos PropertyADVANTAGE professionals will help you manage your property in San Marcos, which was originally located at the intersection of what is currently named Grand Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road. The Santa Fe Railroad had announced to local citizens that tracks would be laid going through the valley, yet they were actually laid one mile away from the center of town. By 1896, San Marcos was a community with its own stores, post office, railroad depot, and blacksmith. However, in and around 1903, the town began to retreat and its citizens relocated along the tracks, eventually recognized as Mission Road and Pico Avenue. The town steadily progressed and by 1905 gained rural mail delivery as well as a telephone service. The school that initially started in the Barham area during the 1880s was moved to San Marcos in 1889.

The second school of San Diego’s North County, the Richland School, was built later that year. Farming was San Marcos primary form of commerce during the 19th and 20th centuries. Dairy and poultry production become a major trade in San Marcos in the mid-20th century, making it a hub for plenty of delicious food and eateries in the area. Home to several colleges and some of the best schools in North County, San Marcos is an area for students and families alike.
